Breaking the Cycle of Poverty in Jaipur's Slums.

3.105 children learn. 3.856 women earn. Entire communities break free from poverty.

Slums Are Growing. Opportunities Are Not.

170 million people live in India’s slums. Most will never escape.

Why? Because poverty is a cycle:

  • Children can’t go to school
  • Women can’t earn income
  • Families stay trapped

We break that cycle. By providing education and meals to children, skill youth and train woman to uplift complete slum communities.

Our goal is simple: Break the poverty cycle permanently.

We create sustainable change through a holistic approach by combining education and economic development. We teach and feed children, we train women and we skill youth.

10 Steps to a Better Future

Most children in slums don’t have birth certificates. Government schools won’t accept them.

We give each child their own progress booklet. It tracks every skill learned. It becomes their proof. Their passport to education.

The First Steps Acadamy program opens doors to public schools.

Our programs

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Women empowerment includes literacy courses, sewing courses and soft skills. Women learn practical things in the literacy course, like writing their name, counting and reading. In the soft skills programs women learn how to stand up for themselves, and they also learn communication skills and obtain knowledge on health and hygiene. After the course women are assisted in finding a job or setting up their own business.

– 3.856 woman have been trained sewing

– 1.253 woman have finished their literacy course

– 1.477 woman have their own bank accounts.

SKILLS AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

This program focuses on unemployed youth. The aim is to teach them an employable skill. Among these skills there are computer skills, English speaking & personal development, literacy courses, life skills, automobile repairing, electricien, stitching, sewing and beauty parlor. Next to the practical skill, the program is accompanied by an obligatory soft skills course. In this course the youngsters learn about health, hygiene, nutritional meals, equality and more. Youth are also supported in starting a career after the program. The two other programs are the Training Center for Integrated Development (TCID) and the One Village One Product (OVOP).

672 Youth have completed their computer course.

98 Youth completer their 4 months TCID course, of which 93 have started earning a good income to support their family.

HEALTH AND HYGIENE

The health and hygiene program contains several aspects, like the quarterly health check for the children of RCFs education center and other persons in their community. Special cases are provided with the needed care, when possible. Next to that children at the education center get health education and every Thursday is health and hygiene day. On that day the children and staff clean an area in the slum, get their nails cut, get a haircut, they wash their clothes, take a bath etc. There are also Community Cleaning Actions and other awareness events to include the communities in the integrated development.

32,450 people have been benefiting from health check-ups and health services.

FOOD PROGRAM

The food program provides the children with one nutritious meal per day on school days, from Monday to Saturday. The meals are decided upon in collaboration with a nutritionist in order to meet the nutritional needs of the children. For many children this is the only meal they get. The health and attention of the children improved significantly since the introduction of this program. Next to the food program we collect gifts from weddings and bring it to the slums.

10,03,813 meals have been served to under privileged slum children.

5.000.000 meals have been served to needy people in the slums.

EDUCATION

Our ‘First Steps Activity’ (FSA) education centers are divided in two different centers: main centers and satellites. The satellites are based in the slums and focus on young children who will be taught up to the second grade. After that they can go to the main center where the children will be taught up to the eighth grade and where they are prepared to go to mainstream education. Children are taught in a friendly manner, so that they feel welcomed. Students learn at their own pace through the ‘Ten Steps For a Better Future’ curriculum. Next to academic education, children get moral education, sports and extraordinary sessions like art competitions and music class. Girls that work and thus have no time to go to our FSA center can go to the dignity course of 2 hours per day.

3.105 children have been receiving an education, and 2.516 of them are already in mainstream education and continuing their education.
